Mere Dil Ki Raakh

Because I can’t get enough of Bashir Badr, here’s another one.

I returned from a week-long trip to Kashmir yesterday, and everywhere I went, I couldn’t help but say these lines to myself:

“Makaan se kya mujhe lena?
Makaan tumko mubarak ho
Magar ye ghaas wala reshmi kaaleen mera hai.”

Babur was correct. Babur knew what I know today. You can see this picture of the Pahalgam Golf Course I shot here from my chotu phone, and tell me if you don’t agree with this:

Gar firdous burae zameen hasto; hameen asto, hameen asto, hameen asto!

Soak your mind in some more of Bashir Badr’s works. Here’s a recital by Tanu Sharma in Manish Gupta’s channel Hindi Kavita 🙂

MY FAVOURITE CHANNEL EVVVEER.

Mere dil ki raakh kured mat
Ise muskurake hawa de
Ye chirag phir bhi chirag hain
Kahin tera haath jala na de

Don’t scratch away the ashes of my heart
Sway it away with your smile instead
They are still lamps, you see
Just be careful that they don’t burn your hand

Naye daur ke naye khwaab hain
Naye mausamon ke ghulaab hain
Ye mohabbaton ke chirag hain
Inhe nafraton ki hawa na de

These are the new dreams of the new times
New roses of this new weather
These are lamps of love
Don’t dampen them with hatred

Zara dekh chaand ki pattiyon ne
Bikhar bikhar ke tamam shab
Tera naam likha hai raet par
Koi lehar aake mita na de

Just look how the moon’s leaves
Have spread all over the evening sky
I have written your name on the sand
I pray the waves don’t wash it away

Main udaasiyan na saja sakun
Kabhi jism-o-jaan ke mazaar par
Na diye jalein meri aankh mein
Mujhe itni sakht saza na de

That I’m not able to display my pain
On any shrine of either body or soul
That nothing lights up my eyes
Don’t sentence me to such a punishment

Mere saath chalne ke shauq mein
Badi dhoop sar par uthayga
Tera naak-naksh hai mom ka
Kahin gham ki aag ghula na de

In the lust of walking next to me
You will have to face the heat of the world

And you, your face, that is made up of wax
I hope that fire from the sorrow doesn’t melt it away

Main ghazal ki shabhnami aag se
Ye dukhon ke phool chuna karun
Meri sultanat mera phan rahe
Mujhe taj-o-takht khuda na de

From the dewy eyes of this ghazal
I wish to pluck the flowers of sadness away
I hope for my talent to remain as my kingdom
I hope God doesn’t bestow upon me any thrones or crowns

Yahan log rehte hain raat-din
Kisi maslehat ke naqaab mein
Ye teri nigah ki saadgi
Kahin dil ke raaz bata na de

Here people live every day
Covered in some or the other mask of secrets

I hope the simplicity in your eyes
Doesn’t give away what’s in your heart.

In Devnagari:
