Chandni Raat (Ali Sethi)

I love the smell of love. I love the drunkenness. I love how annoying it is. I love how wonderfully coy. Did I mention how annoying it is? And maybe just as much obsessive?

But.

I love being lovesick. Always have.

I feel like I’ve finally begun to function.

The world is rosy. Life is hopeful. I’m filled with meaning and my heart struggles to beat for just me. Daydreams are pretty much replaceable with oxygen and practical difficulties are disguised as unicorns. With wings.

The only fun thing that’s different this time is that I am aware.

I think when we detach ourselves from our own sweetest dream, can we drag the baggage of our real life with one hand and draw sand paintings with another.

I think I may have summed my view of what life really is about. It’s about dragging ‘stuff’ and making sand paintings.

‘Stuff’ comprises of the mundane and less valuable things in life. It’s the notional operational expense of living.

Whereas sand paintings are carefully designed, grain by grain ‘pulled together’ imagery called ‘art’. It may very well just be ‘sand’, but it takes effort, dedication, practice and skill to turn it into art.

Like love. Like friendships. Like family.

Separation is inevitable. Sometimes it’s physical distance, and at other times it’s just our inability to reach out to the person sitting across from us.

But when this distance disappears, all that is left behind is a tiny flame that didn’t stop burning. The why of life. And nothing… NOTHING compares to the bliss from reunion. Of finally being able to be for each other.

When I saw Ali Sethi’s music video for Chandni Raat the first time, I couldn’t stop myself from smiling and admiring the work that was done. The music is unbelievably beautiful yes, but the video has been so heartwarmingly designed and shot that it manages to stir something inside you that you may have forgotten exists. It reminds you of the little things that make us human, and I couldn’t help but smile because I felt thankful for this visually and emotionally stunning reminder. Kudos.

Originally, this song is a ghazal written by Saiffudin Saif sahab (also translated below).

This version is written by Saifuddin Saif, Ali Sethi, Shakeel Sohail.

Absolute love love love.

For you, love.

Watch. And let your heart melt.

Chandni Raat

Chandni raat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai
Lab pe ek baat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai

This moonlit beautiful night
Has come to shine after a long long time
For the longest time I’ve been wanting to say this
And now I’ve finally said it all..

Chandni raat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai..

This night, filled with light.. Has come after a long time

Na khule aankh
Agar khwaab hai, toh khwaab sahi
Na khule aankh
Agar khwaab hai, toh khwaab sahi

If this is a dream
I hope I never open my eyes to see
If at all this isn’t true
And this is dream, then let it be, let it be

Ye mulaqaat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai
Ye mulaqaat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai
Lab pe ek baat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai
Chandni raat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai..

This meeting of ours
Has happened after a long time
You and I
Have happened after a long long time
What I am about to say
I’ve been wanting to say this for a while
As this beautiful night unfolds
After a long wait

Maang rakhi thi
Badi der se jo wasl ki shaam
Maang rakhi thi
Badi der se jo wasl ki shaam
Wo mere haath
Badi der ke baad aayi hai
Wo mere haath
Badi der ke baad aayi hai
Lab pe ek baat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai
Chandni raat…

I’d wished and prayed for
This day of our union
For the longest time
I had hoped to see this night when we all come together
It has finally happened
After a long wait
I can finally say something
That I always wanted to
This night, full of beautiful moonshine,
Has come, after all..

Saifuddin Saif’s Ghazal

Chandni raat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai
Lab pe ek baat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai

This beautiful moonlit night
Has finally come after a long time
I’ve been meaning to say something
For a while now..
And I finally can

Jhoom kar aaj ye
Shab-rang laTein bikhra de
Dekh barsaat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai

Why don’t you sway away your
Silky, dark as night hair tonight?
Look- it is finally raining.. After so long

Aaj ki raat wo aayein hain
Badi der ke baad
Aaj ki raat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai

Tonight’s the night he has come
After so long
Tonight is the night
That’s come after so long

Aah taskeen bhi ab
‘Saif’ shab-e-hijraan mein
Aksar aukaat
Badi der ke baad aayi hai

Well, the only comfort
I, Saif, find is only in the nights of separation
Often this becomes a status quo
After a long time, after all..
