Kaisi Hai Ye Rut (Javed Akhtar)

19 years of Dil Chahta Hai!

Cannot believe. It also feels like I was much older when I met those three friends, got entwined in their stories, discovered Goa as the prime getaway location with friends, and so much more.

Wasn’t the film a tribute to all love stories? And friendships? As each year passes by, we will continue to wonder what made this film so heartwarming and why we can’t stop rewatching it with friends and people we love every now and again.

That’s a nice aftertaste to leave on someone’s mind no? The sense of wonderment. A never ending journey of figuring out the whys and the hows.

I just want to curl up in a blanket, and keep replaying this wonderful song that was my ultimate favourite from the film.

Akshay Khanna. The unexpected surge of his emotions. That look on his face. Dimple Kapadia.

“Sid! Bas.. bas abhi aa rahi hun.”

“Haan, koi baat nahi. (frowns) Take your time.”

This song is about dipping your feet in the ocean of love and really wondering what it is. When the mind is kicking and screaming and making you feel like you’re on the top of the world, and your heart’s beating for another person- maybe then, you see all the things this song talks about. And hopefully after.

Oh, and finally, that painting.

The melody, the lyrics, the singing.. it all just works perfectly. Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy’s soulful music, Srinivas’ singing and lyrics by Javed Akhtar sahab. Why wouldn’t it work!? From the beloved film, Dil Chahta Hai.

Kaisi Hai Ye Rut

Kaisi hai ye rut ki jismein
Phool banke
Dil khile

I wonder what season it is
That hearts are blooming just like flowers

Ghul rahe hain
Rang saare
Ghul rahi hain

All the colours are blending
And the smells are fusing

Chandni, jharne, ghataayein
Geet, baarish, titliyaan
Humpe ho gaye hain
Sab meherbaan!

The moonlight, the waterfalls, the wind
Songs, rains, and butterflies
Looks like everyone’s
Being ridiculously kind to me!

Kaisi hai ye rut ki jismein
Phool banke
Dil khile?

Nadi ke kinaare
Panchhi pukaare
Kisi panchhi ko

On the shore next to the river

There’s a bird
That’s calling out to another

Ye jo nadi hai
Milne chali hai
Sagar hi ko

Oh, and look!
This river
Is on its way to meet the ocean!

Ye pyaar ka hi saara hai karwaan!

Everything is a story of love after all, isn’t it?

Kaisi hai ye rut ki jismein
Phool banke
Dil khile?

Kaise kisiko bataayein
Kaise ye samjhaayein
Kya pyaar hai?

How do you tell someone
How do you explain

What love really is?

Bandhan nahi hai
Aur na koi bhi
Deewar hai

There are no ties
There are no walls

Suno pyaar ki niraali hai dastaan!

Look, love is weird like that!

Kaisi hai ye rut ki jismein
Phool banke
Dil khile!

I wonder what season it is
A season so wondrous
That our hearts are blooming like flowers!

  1. Zeldin said beautifully that we all have to learn to manage our memories. PC this blog helps me to revisit and manage memories better; in fact much better. Keep writing, keep illuminating the past, so that we have the sufficient light to see and manage present and built and better future..much love ..Sudhir

  2. I LOVE this song so much! It’s a highly underrated song from that era.. there’s a sort of peace that descends whenever I listen to this song. Makes me want to sit by a flowing brook with my feet in the cold water and enjoy this song in the background.
